Our Story: A Letter from our Founder

Hi there! Welcome to Mission for Mobility! I’m Jada Yang (she/her/hers) and I am an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley intending to study Public Health, Public Policy, and Disability Studies!

While I consider myself to be a “normal” teenager, hanging out with friends, competing in debate tournaments, and being actively involved in school activities, I feel like I am a lot more (and different) than that.

That’s because I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy after my premature birth, limiting my ability to fully use my legs the same way others kids do. Growing up with a mobile disability was hard (and still is), and it’s been difficult to relate to kids my age. While others were playing tag at recess, I found myself sitting on the field bleachers, playing card games.

Throughout the years, many of my peers (and their parents) would ask me questions like, “What is wrong with you?” or “If you were disabled, why don’t you have a wheelchair?”. These questions often made me feel like an outcast. I wasn’t “normal” due to my disability, but I wasn’t “disabled” enough by other people’s stereotypical standards. Over time, I started to feel ashamed for having a disability. While other kids were playing, I spend hours in physical therapy, strengthening my legs. I wasn’t accepted by my community and it really impacted my self-identity

Because of this, I often felt like I was alone and unrecognized. But my father has always said, "if you fall down seven, you stand up eight," meaning that when you face hardship or defeat, you get back up again and be stronger than you had been before.

As a result, my feelings of isolation and abnormality have turned into my passion and commitment to raising awareness and empathy for other kids just like me. That’s why I started Mission for Mobility. With this organization, I hope that other disabled youths will understand that they are not alone. My goal is to create a support system for those like me, empowering them to be their best selves, while also educating the communities we live in that we are “normal” people too!

Thanks for being a part of Mission for Mobility! If you have any questions or feedback, please reach out to us at any time!

Best wishes,

Jada :)
